Ice glaciation in autumn: 5 checks, the 90 % Preventing cases
**Short version:** Cool, humid air + partial load = high risk. With this 2-minute routine, you significantly reduce icing.
TL;DR - Cockpit checklist
1. Adjust mixture as best as possible (respect POH limits).
2. **Carb heat** Pull test: Observe rotational speed/manifold pressure.
3. Longer descent? **Before** Set carb heat.
4. By floor rollers/backtrack: Short **Carb heat** for drying.
5. On rough runs: **Carb Heat to clear**, then adjust performance.
How you recognize it
– Rough engine run, **RPM drop** > usual, time-delayed reaction to gas.
– Humid weather conditions: 0-20 °C, visibility below 10 km, deep clouds, drizzle.
– Decrease in climb performance despite full throttle.
Practice: Decision tree
– **Rough run?** → Carb Heat **ful** + keep performance → will it be better?
→ Yes: Icing confirmed → hold 30-60 s, then gradually hold back.
→ No: Check ignition/mixture, if necessary plan landing.
Maintenance tips
– Check the tightness of the intake tract (hose clamps, carburettor flange).
– Bowden cable path **Carb heat** Adjust according to AMM, air filter dry/clean.
– Calibrate temperature probes (if any); Record data in the **Log**.
